Cursusdoelen

Knowledge-related objectives

  • Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
  • distinguish relevant dimensions of intervention in organisations

  • make meaningful connections between these dimensions

Application-related objectives

  • students learn to apply the conceptual framework to a practical, structure-related business problem

Reflection-related objectives

  • students learn to critically read and analyse academic texts in which aspects and elements of interventions are explicitly discussed

  • they learn to relate these texts to the conceptual framework that is central to the course.
Inhoud

The course Interventions in Organisations is designed to familiarise students with a conceptual framework that can be used to plan, control, evaluate and learn from interventions in organisational structures. To this end, the course introduces students to (1) problems related to interventions in organisations, (2) a conceptual framework consisting of three related dimensions that should be taken into account in order to deal with these problems, and (3) scientific literature related to both interventions and the three dimensions.

The three dimensions contained in the conceptual framework are:

  1. the functional dimension comprising the following activities: diagnosis, design, implementation and evaluation

  2. the social dimension, which concerns the acceptance and integration of relevant intervention aspects (such as problem formulation, diagnostic variables, cause analysis, proposed solutions, etc.) by the social system in which the intervention is to take place

  3. the infrastructural dimension involving instruments and techniques that are available for meeting the objectives specified in the functional and social dimensions

The course elaborates this basic three-dimensional conceptual framework by explaining what each of the dimensions entails, how the dimensions are related to each other, and how the dimensions can be used for the purpose of interventions in the structure of organisations. Further, it discusses applying it to a business case, and relating it to scientific literature on organisational change.
