The main objectives are that after this course:

  • You understand and evaluate the main goals and challenges of conservation biology
  • You critically assess in which cases measurements on individual animals are useful fitness proxies and indicators for population health
  • You appropriately analyze count data, and handle missing information, to derive population trends in conservation status assessments
  • You have a good overview of the main techniques used to integrate different data sources (e.g. meta-analyses and population viability analysis) to inform conservation policty, and can apply basic versions of these techniques
  • You appreciate the possibilities for MSc internships on quantitative conservation biology, in cooperation with the Natuurplaza partners at the Nijmegen campus
Inhoud

Conservation biology as a science is rapidly maturing. Nature management policy increasingly needs to be based on scientific evidence. As species- and system-based conservation involves many aspects, we need proper tools to analyse data on species abundance and models to investigate the potential roles of pressure factors and efficacy of management options. In this course you will learn about the current state-of-the-art of quantitative conservation biology.
