Inhoud

Organizations may be regarded as ‘systems’ consisting of elements having relations that enable some primary transformation to take place. This primary transformation transforms inputs, like material, energy, data or clients, into outputs and by doing so the system delivers a contribution to society that is valued by customers and other societal stakeholders (Achterbergh & Vriens, 2009).

This course aims to provide some background on the view of organization and how to align business and IT in an enterprise. Besides that, the course will discuss the privacy and legal aspects related to information used in an organization.

The course will take 8 weeks. The first four weeks of the course will contain guest lectures/lectures and the last four weeks will contain a paper project or an assignment that the students have to do based on one of the topics of the lectures.

Bijzonderheden
The guest lecture by Mireille Hildebrandt will ensure that the students who are taking the course Law in Cybersecurity at the same time will also benefit from this lecture.

Section by Mireille Hildebrandt (Computing Science): Privacy and new data protection regulation

Section by Erik Proper (Computing Science): Informed Design of Organizations and their Enterprises

• Design in the context of organizations; different perspectives
- Organizational sciences vs. engineering sciences
- Pre-meditated top-down vs. ad-hoc bottom-up
- System vs. ecological (system of systems)
• Control loop: sensing, planning and actuating
• Models and construction principles

When applying the control loop in the context of design of organisations, models can be seen as the primary information object concerning the organisation and its change/evolution. The use of models in combination with (engineering based) "construction principles" results in what we call informed design. From this perspective, we then (re)visit topics such as enterprise architecture, information systems engineering, organizational design, etc.Section by Marc van Lieshout (Computing Science): Respecting privacy in a time of Big data

• Privacy by default: from behavioral economics to technical standardization.
• Privacy impact Assessment: beyond risk analysis.
• Control by users: organizing supervision on. Big data use.
Toetsinformatie
Students will complete the course by writing a term paper. Each of the lecturers will provide two/three paper topics that the students can pick to write their term paper on. Each lecturer will mark the papers related to their topic. There will not be any final exam and the marks of the students will be based on the term paper.
