| After the course, you are able to:
- recognize and design synthetic multi-step strategies for the synthesis of specific target organic molecules
- compare and apply various reactions in which carbon-carbon bonds are created to synthesize structural elements that frequently occur in organic molecules
- distinguish a large variety of more advanced chemical reaction types (e.g. ionic, concerted and radical reactions) and understand the stereo- and regiochemical consequences
- produce detailed mechanistic descriptions of complex reactions to explain the stereo- and regiochemical result
|
| The course Organic chemistry builds upon the conceptual approach of the courses 'Reactions and kinetics' and 'Synthesis of biomolecules' by focussing on the relationship between functional groups and organic chemistry transformations. For the synthesis of any given organic molecule (natural product, drug, polymer, etc.), organic chemists have access to a well-filled toolbox of methods and techniques. Part of this toolbox will be covered during this course, with a focus on the development of a thorough mechanistic understanding. |
