This course is intended for all students who want to learn about the essentials of organic chemistry. First an introduction will be given how organic molecules are built up out of atoms, by describing their electronic structure and bonding interactions. This will be followed by a discussion of some basic reactions that molecules can undergo, such as substitution, addition and elimination processes. In the final part of the course, reactions that are commonly observed in biology will be highlighted. This will help students to understand how important classes of biomolecules such as peptides and carbohydrates react and are formed. |
