| After this course, you are able to:
- understand and predict the structure, main properties and reactivity of inorganic coordination complexes
- apply the important binding models of metal-ligand interactions (crystal field and MO theory) to predict the strength of ligand binding, and the resulting spectroscopic and physical properties
- distinguish, recognize and name different types of reaction mechanisms involving metal complexes including ligand exchange processes, redox reactions, reactions between ligands and reactions on ligands

In the course Inorganic Chemistry first the basic chemistry of transition metals is discussed. The lectures give an overview of the types of reactions that play a role in transition metal complexes, such as ligand exchange processes, redox reactions and reactions between and on ligands.Later on, ligand exchange processes will be treated in more depth, in particular addition, dissociation and and substitution reactions at octahedral and square planar complexes.
Furthermore, mechanisms of redox reactions will be discussed (electron transfer, oxidative addition, reductive elimination), employing the predictive values of the Marcus theory and the Frank-Condon principle. The reaction mechanisms will be supported by experimental evidence.
