The mission of the Institute of Molecules and Materials (IMM) is to conduct research and to train students in the design, study, and manipulation of properties of functional molecules and materials. In this course we discuss the rational design, preparation, characterization, properties, and applications of various materials, such as supramolecular compounds, (micro)crystalline and magnetic materials, thin films, polymers and liquid crystals. Understanding of the intermolecular interactions of materials and their relationship to their macroscopic properties and functionality is the key concept of this master course. The main goal is to link microscopic structure to macroscopic properties, such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, optical, and magnetic properties. Methods for the analysis of various materials will be discussed, with particular attention for recent developments in materials science within the IMM. |
