- The student aquires knowledge of the basic crystal lattices, the conecpt of the reciprocal lattice and is able to describe them in terms of unit vectors and unit cells
- The student knows the basic properties of lattice vibrations in solids and is able to perform simple calculations of the phonon dispersion relation, the phonon density of states and the thermal properties of phonons
- The student is able to understand the basic properties of electrons in solids and can perform simple calculations of the electronic bandstructure, the electronic density of states and the electronic and thermal conduction of electrons
- The student is acquainted with the quantum mechanical description of solids and their classification in metals, insulators and semiconductors

| This course is part of the series Structure of Matter (SdM), in which, starting from quantum mechanics, the basic properties of matter are treated. This part deals with solid state physics, supplementary to and in preparation of the other SdM courses and in preparation of the more advanced courses in solid state physics. |
