Aims
The objectives of the course are threefold:
  • to facilitate students in choosing a track within the MSc programme (master orientation)
  • to inform students about internship possibilities in the field of biology and environmental science, both in research as well as management (internship orientation)
  • to encourage students to think about future career possibilities (job orientation)
Upon completing the Master programme graduates are qualified for various jobs including positions as a researcher, consultant, teacher, manager or officer. Employers usually include universities, schools, institutes, governmental or non-governmental organizations and industry.
Content
As a first Master course in the curriculum you will become acquainted with the research as carried in the Institute for Water and Wetland Research (IWWR), where most general biologists from Nijmegen reside. After a general introduction to the mission and research program of the IWWR, you will receive information from all IWWR research groups on the topics they study and the methods and instruments they use.
This program is supplemented with excursions to institutes and organisations  for you to get clear impressions of the working environments of Nijmegen biologists, the kind of problems they tackle, and how the knowledge you acquire is applied. Finally, this Orientation course contains a self-assessment on your personal goals for your Master program and the working environments that you prefer, so that you can make well-founded choice for the tracks and interships to chooce.

Additional comments
Do you know which tracks and internships are most appealing to you? Do you know what jobs are available to after graduation? Do you know what kind of position you would like to hold in 5 years from now?Every year students come to us, sometimes even at the end of their MSc program, not really knowing what they are heading for. Obviously, the earlier you learn about the options and the more consciously you think about your interests, the more likely you end up where you want to be. More formally stated, the present course guides students of the MSc Biology and Msc Environmental Sciences through the Master programme on their way to a position on the job market.
Topics
• Self assessment
• Visits to IWWR departments
• Excursions to partners
• Reflection report
Test information
