Aims

At the end of this course, you are able to:

  • compare microbial lifestyles based on their thermodynamics and energy yields on molecular level
  • evaluate the link between genomes, genomic potential, annotation and the deduced metabolic pathways in single gene and genome-wide comparisons
  • link biosynthesis (assimilation) and energy conversion (dissimilation) in a pathway model of a single microorganism and in comparison to other, distinct microorganisms
    explain the functioning of various microbial fermentations and respiratory chains on pathway level
  • explain different molecular and physiological adaptions of microbes to extreme environmental conditions in the domains Bacteria and Archaea
Content
This course will provide you with an overview on general concepts, hot topics and techniques in microbial physiology and metabolism. Case studies and lectures will be used to get you acquainted with current knowledge and future trend in microbial physiology and metabolism which is the basis for many industrial applications in microbial sciences.

Prerequisites
Basic knowledge in microbial physiology and biochemistry as can be obtained in the course "Physiology of Microorganisms" in the BSc Biology at RU or by self-study with the books "Brock Microbiology of Microorganisms" and "Stryer: Biochemistry"
