The goal of this course is to familiarize the student with the main mathematical methods and tools as used in biology, commonly known as 'Calculus'.
At the end of the course the student can
- understand texts that include basic mathematical equations such as comonly used in the scientific biological literature
- apply mathematical concepts and methods to common problems in biology
- solve basic mathematical problems
- report on how the solution of the aforementioned basic mathematical problems were derived, i.e. correctly formulate mathematical solutions

The course will cover introductory topics from calculus. We will start with the rehearsal of topics expected to be known from secondary school (fractions, exponents, logarhithms, solving of simple equations, differentiation) and will continue with more advanced topics integration and differential equations). The mathematical methods will also be illustrated by applications in a biological context. |
