Placement procedure-
  • The student is familiar with a broad selection of topics in contemporary gravity research, ranging from general relativity to quantum gravity, covering both physics and mathematical aspects.

  • The student can extract key information from the scientific literature on a selected topic and effectively present and discuss the material in an interactive setting, under the guidance of the staff members involved in the course.

  • The student gets experience in presenting scientific research in front of an audience of peers and experts, and in giving feedback to the presentations of others.

  • The student can succinctly summarize the presentation material and discussion topics in a written report.

The overarching theme of the Gravity+ Club changes annually. The theme of this year’s edition is “Gravity and Time”, a truly wide-ranging topic with numerous applications. Among the possible subtopics are time functions in general relativity, closed timelike curves, microcausality, the ADM formalism, the initial value formulation and the problem of time in quantum gravity.

The course is aimed at master students interested in gravity in all its facets and in engaging with their fellow students and local staff members who are experts on the subject. It is a compulsory course for all master students who have signed up for the Gravity+ Master Track.

Test information

The course is assessed on the quality of the student’s presentation, on his/her continued and active participation in discussions, and on the short write-up that has to be submitted, summarizing the student’s presentation and associated discussion. There is no other form of written or oral examination. The grading is pass/fail. Attendance of all joint course activities is compulsory.

More detailed information on the available topics, background material and the format of the presentations and write-ups will be distributed before the beginning of the course. For organizational purposes, it will be helpful if participants sign up in good time. – Note that the Gravity+ Club is not a substitute for the compulsory student seminar (NWI-NM072E) for students following the Particle and Astrophysics master.
